As discussed in our Bird Song section, identifying birds by their songs and calls
is one of the most challenging skill sets in birding. Now there is a product that may enable the masses of
birders who have not mastered this skill to make those ID's anyway. The product is new (in fact it has not
yet been shipped) and claims to leverage advanced speech recognition technology to automatically provide
a reasonably accurate identification of a bird song.

The product is sold as a combination of a base unit (pictured above) and a regional bird database. All customers
purchase the same base unit. Each customer chooses the regional database related to the area that she plans to bird.
As users travel, they can purchase more regional databases and load them onto the device.
We are very excited by the potential of this product and look forward to trying it in the field. As we have
more information on the performance of the device, we will post updates here for your convenience. If you are interested
in pre-ordering the device or learning more about its capabilities, visit the developer's site,
Wildlife Acoustics.
