Simple Clothing Requirements
One of the great aspects of bird watching is that not much materially is required to participate. At the most basic
level, if you walk into your yard, and watch a bird in a tree, you are bird watching. You don't need the field
guide, the binoculars, or the PDA. Of course, many folks wouldn't consider this birding unless you tried to identify
the bird, but buying a book and binoculars to go in this direction isn't too cumbersome.
Once you have the basics, you may want to purchase a few pieces of clothing to support your hobby. The most
common bird watching apparel is the vest with lots of pockets. The vest is a good place to put your field guide,
notebook, suntan lotion, and other items you plan to carry into the field. The vest with its numerous pockets
and easy-access zippers is a convenient approach to storage.
As you will be spending a lot of time outdoors, you may want to consider a good hat and sunglasses. Many of us have
these items already, so there is no need to spend more money. A good pair of boots is helpful if you plan to hike
on steep hills or marshy lowlands. Long sleeve, light weight shirts and long pants are also nice-to-haves as you may
want to avoid the sun and limit exposed skin for mosquitoes.
